My name is Lynn Blackmer and for as long as I can remember I have always had the luxury of having animals enhancing my life. As a very young child, I can fondly remember having dogs, cats, goats, cows, sheep, turkeys and chickens. I can remember as a young teenager we adopted a pony, Patches, which later would become mine. Eventually my family adopted a horse, Cocoa that became my sister’s. Throughout our childhood and into our mid to late teens, my sister and I made a pact that when and if either of us left home, the horse and pony would stay together at my parents’ home and live out the rest of their years because they had become close friends to each other.
I first became interested in alternative medicine when my oldest son started nursery school. As he became exposed to other children he would come down with a cold every other week. Colds would almost always result in ear infections and it seemed like he was put on antibiotics constantly. Worried about him building up a resistance, I researched homeopathy and sought the advice of a local naturopathic doctor. After administering specific remedies, my son could go two weeks and then three weeks and then longer without becoming sick, provided I caught his symptoms when they first appeared. Since that time, I have used homeopathic remedies, different lines and varieties of flower essences, Reiki, herbal remedies, and acupuncture for my own health improvement. I do also use conventional medicine and physicians, but it is my own choice to gravitate towards alternative medicine before seeking conventional medicine and/or physicians. I firmly believe there is a need for both types of medicine and that they can complement each other depending on the situation. I first became exposed to Reiki when I saw a Reiki practitioner, who later became a dear friend and my Reiki teacher, work on a dog who was adopted by my grandparents. Once they got her home, the dog was very shy and seemed to have breathing issues. I watched as my friend worked with Lady as she almost immediately relaxed into a state of restful sleep. I was so impressed. My friend was also an animal communicator and told the past history of the dog and how she was mistreated which explained a lot of her fearful behavior at times. Several years ago, we adopted an older golden retriever, whom we named Wilson, from a local animal shelter. I saw Reiki improve the movement in his back legs which were quite sore and stiff with we thought was arthritis. We also were able to learn some of Wilson’s past with the practitioner's help in communicating with him. After seeing those results I decided I wanted to learn Reiki to help both animals and people. Over the years, Reiki has helped my back pain significantly as well as helping me release some old emotions that no longer served a purpose in my life. I have also seen it help two more of our dogs and our two current horses as well as one who is no longer with us. Learning from my experiences with alternative medicine, including Reiki, and seeing how it has improved the quality of life of both past and present animal companions and family members, I plan to use this knowledge to help others improve their quality of life as well.
